I am in support of breastfeeding. There are alot of benefits for both babies and their mums. ? And there is no side effect of it.So why not to breastfeed.Govt. Is also promoting breastfeeding.I dont know why some people dont want to breastfeed.

I know, Annie. But to herself she is well researched. The problem I've had is that I haven't respected women who choose not to breastfeed. Not those who can't, but those who just decided they wouldn't. Because it was icky, or because they were embarrassed. Or, my most hated, because they wanted their body to be their own. I seriously couldn't see how a mother could choose to have a baby and then not do everything possible to give that baby the best start. Now I do. And whether I believe her arguments or not, I can see how other people would. And if I put myself in their shoes and see it that way, I really can't see them as bad parents. That's been making me feel a lot better. I'm really far too judgmental of people I don't know.

I want people to breastfeed. I talk about it constantly in real life. I am willing to offer support to anyone who wants it. I approach pregnant woman on the street and tell them about the FABULOUS <a href="http://breastfeedingcenter.org/" rel="nofollow">Breastfeeding Center of Washington DC</a> (<a href="http://www.breastfeedingcenter.org/donate.html" rel="nofollow">donate!</a>). I wasn't breastfed and I often wonder if I'd still be allergic to milk fat or have eczema if I had been for even 3 months. I believe breastfeeding saves the planet from waste and gives our children closeness they don't always get from a bottle. (Please note the "not always" I know too many moms & dads who hold their babies and look into their eyes and are just perfect...the problem is I've also seen 2 month old babies in car seats with a bottle propped up in their face. I can't agree with that. Ever.)

But I judge people I don't know unfairly. Every time I'd hear that someone "just didn't want" to breastfeed I was disgusted. And that's unfair. I want to be like <a href="http://www.phdinparenting.com" rel="nofollow">you</a>, as from the posts I've read on your blog you are VERY good at not judging other moms. And this article helped me to see how someone could make that decision and not be callous to their child's health in my eyes.

I will say, this article was named poorly. She really didn't make a "case against" breastfeeding. It was really more of a "why I'm not going to beat myself up any more" over breastfeeding.

Also, I had a hard time with her idea that if women stopped breastfeeding men would suddenly know what to do with their kids. Come on! I mean, I'm pretty sure men will always think they're baby-dumb (which they aren't). Those 9 months where I got to "know" my son will always be a mystery to my husband.

The thing is the article comes across as well researched, BUT IT IS NOT! That is the problem. She is a respected journalist and lots of people are going to read her article and say, look...breastfeeding isn't all that beneficial. But she is wrong. She picked and chose a few studies and ignored many many others. She discussed a few areas where the benefits of breastfeeding are slight and ignored many many more.

Agree. Agree. Agree. And I'm not going to click on The Case Against Breastfeeding, because I really just don't want to know.

Yes, but it interferes with my need to be "right." And have specific answers. It's so very hard to change my thinking.

I haven't read Dr. Spock. Are you really getting a lot out of it?

This is what I love about Dr. Spock. Everything he writes is couched in "but as a parent, you really do know what's best for your kid. It might not be the same as for other kids, but you know the right decisions for yours, and you should trust in yourself that you're making the right decisions."
