Mass Hysteria discusses recent movies condemned by the Catholic Church. ( I’m really looking forward to The Crime of Father Amaro having completely fallen for Gael Garcia Bernal in Amorres Perro and been inflamed by Y Tu Mama Tambien and the Why doesn’t the Church just wisen up?

I don’t care to solve it’s problems…I just came to the part in Even Cowgirls Get the Blues where Mr. Robbins, through one of his characters, chastises the West for adopting Eastern religions while losing their own, including Christianity. We had this rich culture and religion. How was that completely lost?

i hate to do this, but two questions to bother you.

    1. “mexican cinema is really coming into its own now.” can you give me a report on the past 100 years of mexican cinema? because, otherwise, that’s media hype you’re spouting.

    2. were you drunk or stoned when you wrote the shit about western religion being lost? fuck, i’m an atheist, but that was hilarious. Tom Robbins? as an actual source on religion? on anything? i like his books, but the guy is useless unless you need a source on what a drag it is to run out of cash in Amsterdam. he chastises the West for choosing Eastern religion over Western tradition like Catholicism? ouch, he just criticized 50 hippies in Berkeley, and their sandals are burning.

    think.

Not that I have the dedication to religion that you have, having never dumped someone over it so that I may find God. I suppose we can’t all have your depth, but I am a spiritual person, and we’re all looking for someone.

I never said Tom Robbins was source on anything. I like his writing. And he was criticizing Christianity, have you even read the book?

As far as Mexican Cinema is concerned, perhaps I misspoke, as I was merely saying that it IS getting media attention, whereas I suppose that “come into its own” does imply that it’s gained something that it lacked, which I’m not so sure that is true any more than one it is of American film.

No, I don’t have a report of the last 100 years of cinema, but, having been introduced to it in my teens by my uncle (born near Tampico) and reacquainted with it in a Latin American arts class, I can say that the two films (which are certainly not enough to judge anything by) use modern techniques in both story and execution. If you want to get into a debate on this, or hear some of my reasoning, then I’m afraid you’re gonna need to get off your East Coast ass and allow the Pacific some of your time.

Or else put up your own goddamn site and stop being so cowardly.
